The pair was pulsed by discharging a 33µF capacitor into the pair, and the tweeter was moved from having the magnets in-line (both on the bench top) to having the two mounting surfaces in line. The total distance was about 40mm, and while there were differences, they were not pronounced. Part of the problem is that the mid-bass is slow compared to the tweeter, so there was no possibility of seeing separate impulses.

For volume

This means that the midrange selected forthis project must have enough surface area and excursion to play well below350Hz at a minimum of 100dB at one meter. Additionally, the midrange should have a resonant frequency less than175Hz. Since I wanted the option to usea 2nd order crossover, a 5 or 6-inch mid-bass was required to meetthe target specifications. The well-reviewedDayton RS150-8 Reference 6” mid-bass is an 8-ohm driver with the necessarysensitivity, excursion, diameter and low resonant frequency required to meetthe design requirements. Before designing acrossover, the cabinet must be fully assembled including ports anddrivers.

A variation on the 'traditional' bass reflex enclosure uses a passive radiator. This is pretty much a loudspeaker with no magnet or voicecoil, and it's generally tuned for a resonant frequency somewhat below that of the woofer. Some have weights that can be added or removed to tune the resonant frequency of the radiator. These have some advantages over a port, in that there is no possibility of 'chuffing' or other noises that a ported enclosure can create if the air velocity is too high. Rather than being radiated into the room, the sound from the rear of the speaker cone is absorbed, using proprietary fibre mats, felt, carpet, fibreglass, or a combination of these materials. Ideally, no rear radiation will be reflected back through the cone, something that becomes critical at midrange and higher frequencies.

Personally, Iprefer loudspeakers that have a frequency response that tilts slightly downwardso I find the response of this speaker pleasing. It did not ultimately meet the design goal of+/-3dB frequency response deviation but it plays low bass with authority andsounds very good overall. Even though itis a ton of work, there is something very rewarding about designing aloudspeaker from the ground up and the owner of the speakers discussed in articleis extremely happy with his one of a kind creation. In this project, we used 3/4” Balticbirch with a 3/4” MDF baffle and bottom plate.

After a few good books and abit of forum surfing, I decided to jump into a much simpler 2-waymid-tweeter-mid design using pretty inexpensive drivers. This small project taught me a few lessons Ihope you will not have to learn the hard way. Heavy stands add mass to the system making it less likely to move with woofer excursion, and it's important that the stands don't have any audible resonance. While it's unlikely that resonance will be audible (it will be hard to excite any resonant mode unless the boxes are flimsy to start with), sturdy and acoustically 'dead' stands will give some peace of mind. Some provide cable management and/ or the ability to be sand-filled to eliminate (or at least damp) resonant frequencies.

Crossover design is essential in Hi-Fi speakers because it determines how different audio frequencies are distributed among the various drivers. A well-designed crossover ensures seamless integration of drivers, minimizes phase issues, and allows each driver to handle the frequencies it is best suited for. When an audio signal is received, it passes through the amplifier and then to the speakers.

Speaker Enclosures

Bass needs a larger driver than midrange, and once the diameter of the driver is 'significant' compared to wavelength, the off-axis response suffers. Ideally, the driver used for midrange shouldn't exceed around 125mm (5"), but if it has to handle bass as well that's somewhat on the small side of the ideal. In theory, the idea is that the line is infinitely long, but this is a little impractical for most listening spaces .

How Our Speaker Box Calculator Save Your Time?

The greater the asymmetry, the less chance there is of creating sub-panels with the same resonant frequency. The effectiveness of the bracing can be tested with an accelerometer (see Project an audio accelerometer for speaker box testing). This will tell you just how much a panel vibrates, and at what frequency (or frequencies). If you find a panel that appears to have too much vibration, additional bracing will be necessary to reduce it to a level you find acceptable.

Choosing the Right Speaker Enclosure Type and Material

This is certainly not something I'd want to tackle again, especially since I'm more than 20 years older (they were made when I was in my early 50s). That doesn't mean that I won't build any more speakers, but they will be (probably considerably) smaller and less complex overall. Speakers are without doubt the most compromised of all the components that go together for a complete hi-fi system. The individual drivers are a compromise, and not always due to cost - even very expensive drivers are still compromised by the materials and the laws of physics. When multiple drivers are used together, the compromises are simply magnified, but they are even greater if you try to get everything from a single driver.

Mostly, the line is designed for ¼ wavelength at the speaker's resonant frequency, and there will be some reinforcement from the open end of the line. These are notoriously difficult to get 'just right', and the process usually involves experimenting with stuffing within the transmission line until the desired outcome is achieved. An optimally set up transmission line should reduce the resonant frequency of the driver, something that no other enclosure type can achieve. When these materials are added loosely, the effect is to make the enclosure acoustically larger. Both of these change the way the loudspeaker driver reacts with the enclosed volume, mainly at or near the speaker's resonant frequency. Even this term will be variable - some will claim that -40dB is ok, others may insist on at least -60dB, while others might be content with -20dB.

If we have a baffle that is 17m square with our speaker in the centre, this is a theoretically infinite baffle as the sound wave is not large enough to interfere with the rear of the speaker. When a speaker operates, sound waves radiate from the front and rear of the speaker, since the speaker cone moves back and forth. After calculating the dimensions, make sure that you do a 'sanity check', by multiplying each dimension (in decimetres). You should get very close to the number you started with, in both of the cases shown above the answer is very close to 15 litres.

39 Easy Nail Designs Even Beginners Can Do at Home

Another holdover from colder months, chrome nails are here to stay. Instead of covering the entire nail, try incorporating negative space for a fresh take on the trend. Ayla likes to use the Daily Charme UniChrome Unicorn Chrome Powder ($25), applying it over a nude base to soften the look. Le prefers using chrome to create chrome tips and two-toned designs.

Minimalist Art Deco

You can choose whether to leave it as an accent nail or embrace celestial vibes all over. These chevron tips look far more complicated than they are. All you need are two diagonal swipes of polish at the tip and you're out the door.

Fluorescent Floral

The colored stripes make this neutral mani fun and interesting while remaining simple enough for both execution purposes and more conservative settings. Nail stripe stickers can make achieving this look even easier. For more interesting shapes, like curves or lines, Taylor suggests using her eponymous Striper Brush ($22).

Glitter Ombré

"Clean and simple lines to sail into summer are most popular," says Mary Lennon and Leah Yari, co-founders of côte. A simple neutral polish and a hint of colorful sparkle is just enough to give a plain pedicure some oomph. The different shades of purple in this design come together to form a blooming floral design that's perfect for spring.

Sometimes the nail designs that we love—and quite possibly need—are the quietest type. Think negative space, small dots, French tips, fresh colors, glitter accents, and more. Shift your French tip to the corner of your nail for a modern take on the classic manicure. Stick with a pastel shade or go bolder with bright rainbow hues. "A base coat is optional with this design since all the flare is at the tip," notes Meade. Forget what Pinterest and YouTube tutorials have tried to convince you because finding easy nail designs to recreate at home is not, in fact, that easy.

From micro French tips and mismatched nails to funky stickers and squiggly lines. Plus, tips and tricks straight from three nail professionals. New York City-based nail artist Miss Pop has a similar hack for dots using a tailor's pin. She pushes the pointed tip into an eraser for a better grip, then dips the rounded head of the pin into nail polish. She says bobby pins are effective, but her method creates bigger dots if that's the look you're after.

The trick with these is to find some letter decals, making it incredibly easy to turn a basic mani into a true statement. Here's another option for all the French manicure lovers out there. Adorn the center of the nail with whatever design you want. The witchy decals in this mani are making us long for Halloween all year long. Of course, the tools you use are just as important as the colors you choose, which is why she says to reach for thin-tipped detail brushes when drawing the faces. "The small brush gives you the ability to paint thin lines," she says.

This bold design with Zebra print accent nails merges sophistication with a touch of untamed flair, creating a perfect balance of style and individuality. You can never go wrong with a glittery gel manicure, especially for a party or a special celebration. An orange and burgundy ombré design is a fantastic manicure choice for those who crave a bold and dynamic look. The seamless transition between these warm, autumnal hues adds depth and vibrancy to the nails. It seems that the aforementioned showers also inspire new spring nail trends. Adding a few fluffy clouds to a dreamy lavender or bright cerulean base inspires thoughts of sunnier skies, even during the stormy season.

Try using flat-back nail charms like these ($7) to replicate the look. Nail tape masterfully divides this nail bed, with one side flaunting the elegance of marble while the other embraces the simplicity of nude. If shades of royal purple and soft lavender are forever your fave, try this whimsical, heart-shaped approach. Try this creative approach to French nails, straight from the pages of a pop art comic book. This specific shade of turquoise is reminiscent of those iconic blue jewelry boxes of Tiffany & Co. — making this colorful mani distinctively luxe. These silver chrome details have an alien-inspired quality would surely be Beyoncé-approved.

Dip into layers and layers of colors with this 3D nail art look by @GLOSSHOUSE. Nothing is reminiscent of summer like fresh, delicious lemons. This festive blue, yellow, and green mani is almost as good as a freshly-squeezed glass of the good stuff. As a dark pedicure is to winter, white is the color of summer pedicures.

This pink fluorescent grid design is the perfect combination of chic and edgy. It's vibrant and trendy, effortlessly fusing modern aesthetics with playful charm. Glittery tips add a touch of glamour and sophistication to any manicure, elevating the overall look with a subtle, yet dazzling sparkle. According to Nolasco, this striking neon French manicure draws inspiration from idyllic tropical vacations.

Sheet Sets

And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks. I have not had any issue with these sheets staying on the bed.

The Evolving Danger of the New Bird Flu

Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock. Our journey with California Design Den is deeply rooted in California, where our headquarters stand and our design process unfolds.

Mattress Reviews

Don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins. So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall.

A Dreamy Addition to My Bedroom: California Design Den Hand

The fitted sheet has deep pockets (16 inches on the queen-size set I tested) and it fits nicely over most mattresses. Additionally, the pillowcases are designed to be extra roomy, which I like. This prevents the end of your pillow from sticking out if the case shifts as you sleep. The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before. The outbreak of bird flu currently tearing through the nation’s poultry is the worst in U.S. history.

AMAZING, SUPER SOFT SHEETS!!!

So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. One thing I immediately noticed when I took these sheets out of the packaging was how high-quality they felt. The sheets themselves feel quite sturdy and the elastic in the fitted sheet feels strong. Additionally, I have actually washed these sheets a few times and they have held up well. I have not seen any pilling and the sheets feel just as soft, if not softer, than when I first received them. The twin, twin XL, full, and split king fitted sheets have 14-inch pockets, while the queen, king, and California king fitted sheets have 16-inch pockets.

California Design Den vs Parachute Sateen Sheets

So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before. And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented. A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned. So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus.

News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world. Founded in 2014, this site is dedicated to bringing you the most comprehensive sleep-industry information on the web. You’ll find everything from mattress reviews to sleep tips.

And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before. Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus. Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions.

The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932. He ran his practice out of a studio here, and along with his wife Dione, raised three sons in this house, which he designed to demonstrate that Modernist principles could be enjoyed by less affluent clients, while maintaining privacy. Natural light, glass walls, patios and mirrors are hallmarks of the Neutra VDL House. Tours of the property, given by Cal Poly Pomona architecture students, are offered on Saturdays from 11 a.m.

Docent-led tours are also available, with options for a one-hour tour or 20-minute exterior-only tour. Located at The Row in DTLA, Rappahannock Oyster Bar is a go-to spot for an elevated lunch near the office. The space has an industrial vibe, and the patio is perfect for enjoying cold oysters on a sunny day. However, the marble oyster counter is beautiful and even offers a peak at the behind-the-scenes magic in the kitchen. One of the best things about dining at Rappahannock Oyster Bar is the fact that everything is as sustainably and responsibly-sourced as possible. The Chesapeake Bay-farmed oysters are the restaurant’s signature variety, but there are also plenty of West Coast oysters to try, too.

The sidewalk patio has so many string lights, you’ll feel like you’re eating under an old theater marquee. But if you’d rather sit inside, there's a long wooden bar where you can bring a date. If you can, stop by on a Monday night to take advantage of Liv’s half-off oyster deal. Sometimes we want cold, plump, alarmingly fresh, briny-sweet oysters and nothing else.

The walls of the Avila house are made of adobe brick, a material consisting of clay, water and other organic materials like straw. Set amid the crowds and the urban commotion of Grand Central Market, The Oyster Gourmet is an unusual-looking, vaguely steampunk-y small wooden stand designed to look like a giant open oyster shell. And as you might expect, they’ve really only got three things on the menu besides wine, and the one most worth your time is the plate of oysters. The selection constantly changes, and the shuckers are super knowledgeable–so even if you don’t know the difference between a Blue Point and a Wellfleet, they’re always happy to help you figure out what you’ll like. An awesome Manhattan Beach seafood spot the size of a studio apartment, Fishing With Dynamite is the best place to go in the South Bay for oysters and a beer. They’ve got a great selection, from a few different Cape Cod varieties to ones from Baja and Morro Bay.

Thames Street Oyster House is also open for lunch Wednesday-Sunday. Hunks of beautiful claw and tail meat spilled over the open-face crunchy roll. Sitting in the upstairs dining room with a view of the harbor, we wanted to linger over dessert. They’re made in house, which may or may not explain why they took so long to reach our table. The shells were properly set on a bed of rock salt, and their briny inhabitants were dressed with creamed spinach sporting Pernod and Parmesan.

Known as the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles," Phineas Banning built this historic residence in 1864, several years after he founded the town of Wilmington. The 23-room Banning House is widely regarded as the finest example of domestic Greek Revival architecture in Southern California. The house interiors have been carefully restored to their original Victorian beauty - 18 rooms are open to the public. The Banning House was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1935, Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 25 in 1963, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 1971.

Immediately, the place, next to the rollicking Cat’s Eye Pub, was packed. The glow of its debut was quickly doused when Hurricane Irene came roaring up the Atlantic seaboard, threatening to wash out the cobblestone streets and historic structures in the waterfront neighborhood. Once again, Beattie was covering up her exterior—this time with plywood. The site operated as the popular Sand & Sea Club for decades, then sat vacant and boarded up for years until the city of Santa Monica announced plans to renovate and reopen it as a public beach facility. Renowned philanthropist Wallis Annenberg donated $27.5 million to the cause. During the renovation, all of the remaining original structures from the Hearst days were demolished, except for a 110-foot Italian marble swimming pool and one of the guest homes, now known as the Marion Davies Guest House.

Many come from their enigmatic general manager’s family farm in Maine, and are sweet, salty bites that taste so clean, you’d think the kitchen installed a pipeline to the ocean. At the end of the meal, the check is served in an empty oyster can, a fun touch.

When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live. With its menu, décor, and range of prices, Thames Street Oyster House has already managed to find a way to attract locals and visitors in a competitive area of town. We have a feeling that, barring an unforeseen hurricane, the restaurant won’t be boarding up again anytime soon. On one visit, our waiter Tony helped us choose from the dozen types of raw oysters available that day, explaining the pedigree of each. A paper guide with descriptions is given to diners, complete with pencils for marking your choices—similar to making selections at a sushi restaurant. It’s no surprise that oysters—from raw to Rockefeller to shooters—anchor the menu. There’s also a New England theme with lobster dishes, clams, and other seafood rounding out the list.
